How to Install a Door Security Chain
Standard door knob locks do little to keep out a crafty criminal. You may need to install a security chain on a door to keep your family safe. Chain locks allow you to open a door partially to see who’s there instead of greeting strangers and potential predators with a wide open door. Security chain locks are also much harder to force open than other locks.
Before you begin installing a security chain on your door, here’s a list of things you’ll need:
Masking tape
Drill
Safety glasses
Chain lock kit
Pencil
With that, follow the simple steps below to install a security chain on your door:
Step #1:
- Tape up the template for the lock plate (this is the part that is not attached to the chain).
- Position it three to six inches above the deadbolt on your door (if you do not have a deadbolt on the door, place it about three to six inches above the door handle).
Step #2:
- Mark the points on the template with the pencil (the template should make it clear where you need to mark).
- With the door marked, take the template down.
Step #3:
- Pre-drill the holes for the screws (make sure you have the proper bit).
- Drill holes into the appropriate markings.
Step #4:
- Screw the lock plate onto the door.
Step #5:
- Tape up the template for the chain mount (there should be a different template for this).
- Position it on the wall just outside the door frame.
- Make sure it lines up with the lock plate.
Step #6:
- Mark the template, just as you did the first one.
Step #7:
- Pre-drill the holes for the chain mount.
- Screw in the chain mount.
Step #8:
- Make sure the lock is secure and can’t be unchained from the outside.
You’ve now successfully installed a security chain on your door!
