How to Install a Door Jamb Leg
Share |

The jamb of a door is made up of the three pieces of wood that form the inside of the frame. The vertical sections of the jamb are called the legs. Sometimes one leg of a door jamb will be damaged “usually the one with the lock plate” and needs to be replaced. It’s easy to remove the single leg and install a new one.

Before you get started installing a door jamb leg, here’s a list of things you’ll need:

  • Replacement wooden door jamb leg
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • Finishing nails
  • Wood shims
  • Molding
  • Lock plate or hinges (depending on the leg)
  • With that, follow the simple steps below to install a door jamb leg:

    Step #1:
    • Measure the height of the doorframe (the distances from the floor to both the bottom of the header jamb and the upper edge).
    Step #2:
    • Subtract the difference between the two, and angle the upper edge downward by this distance so that it will smoothly connect with the angled edge of the header jamb.
    • Subtract the difference between the two, and angle the upper edge downward by this distance so that it will smoothly connect with the angled edge of the header jamb.
    Step #3:
    • Slide the jamb into place and secure it with finishing nails.
    • Shim the jamb as necessary.
    • Reattach the molding on both sides of the door.
    Step #4:
    • Screw the lock plate or hinges into place, depending on which leg you’re installing.
    • Add a few extra nails around this point for added strength (make sure that they are not all along the same grain of the wood).

You’ve now successfully installed a door jamb leg!
