How to Cut a Doorknob Hole
Share |

In times past, drilling a hole for a doorknob was a chore. However, given the improvements in technology, cutting a hole for a doorknob is now relatively easy. The one thing to remember is to drill the hole as straight as possible whether in the face of the door or in the edge of one.

Before you begin cutting a doorknob hole in your door, here’s a list of things you’ll need:

  • Doorknob
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Tri-square
  • Drill
  • Hole saw
  • One-inch paddle drill bit
  • With that, follow the simple steps below to cut a doorknob hole in your door:

    Step #1:
    • Measure 36 inches up from the floor and make a mark on the door.
    • With a tri-square, lightly draw a horizontal line that covers three-inches (including to the edge of the door).
    Step #2:
    • Determine the back-set measurement of the knob chosen and mark the horizontal line accordingly.
    Step #3:
    • Determine the hole size needed and drill the hole with the hole saw.
    • Center it on the cross hairs created in Steps 1 and 2.
    • Take care to apply even pressure as this hole needs to be as straight and true as possible.
    Step #4:
    • Using the same height measurement, mark the edge of the door for the dead latch.
    • Drill a one-inch hole with a paddle drill bit.
    Step #5:
    • Check all the doorknob parts to be certain they fit properly before installing the knob.
